My sweet little Floridians

While talking about what it will be like when I am old and am a Grandma, I asked the kids what the would call me then.
Mackenna: "mommy"
Micah: "old mommy"

----

When leaving for preschool, we told the kids they needed to put on a jacket because it is chilly outside.
Mackenna: "but we have long sleeves on. A jacket and long sleeves? That's silly."

Early Theologians

Mackenna: "Are there two Gods?"
Me: "No. Why do you ask?"
Mackenna: "Because God prays."

Amazing conversation about the trinity ensues....Wowzers.

----

Micah: "Hey, Dad, some people say that God shines. So, do you think that maybe God is the sun?"

----

She loved the start of her birthday!

Did they grow a year in the week I was gone?

Things I have heard my kids say in the 9 hours I have been home from Indiana...

----

Mackenna, after hearing someone say to "relax" on the TV: "Relax is not something that kids like to do."

----

Micah, coming in the front door: "Mom, do you know what that pile is? That's my pile of random stuff."

----

Me: "Did you go to the Dr. yesterday, Micah?"
Micah: "Oh, yeah, you mean the 'pick your nose appt'." (Referring to the ENT)

----

Micah, while talking to me about a day that I didn't buy him a shirt at the mall: "...do you remember the day of our Disney World adventure when we took a break at the mall..."

----

Dad, after the kids had asked me a lot what I had brought them back from my trip: "Are you happy to see your mom or just see the stuff?"
Both of them: "We like both."

----

Micah: "You got two shirts for both of us; that means you got four shirts!"

----

(lest you would think that I think he is a math genius or something...)
Micah, reading the sign 11:20 on something: "Look it says 'one-dee-one two zero'."

----

Micah: "Jocelyn is the best baby in the whole world."
Mackenna: "That's not nice to the other babies."
Micah: "Well, Jocelyn is the best baby, but I won't tell other babies or else they would know that they weren't best."

----

Micah: "This is the best popcorn in the whole world."
Mackenna: "That's not nice to the other popcorn."
(hmm...see a pattern here?)

----

Micah: "You are the best mommy in the whole wide world. We have a wide earth. That means it is the widest planet. That means it is the biggest planet.
Me: "Well, the earth is not actually the biggest planet."
Micah: "Which one is? Let's look it up on the ipad."

----

Mackenna: "I'm tired. Will you carry me inside?"
Micah: "Me too."
Me: "I'm tired too. Who is going to carry me inside?"
Mackenna: "We can't carry you. You are much bigger than us."
Micah: "And MUCH MUCH heavier."

My Sweet Cheeks

----

Mackenna: "Micah kissed me."
Me: "Oh that's okay; you like kisses."
Mackenna, with horror and emphasis: "I don't want kisses from boys. They're diskusking."

----

Mackenna, getting out of my bed after snuggling this morning, and realizing that I wasn't following her: "Mom, I want someone to come with me."
Me: "I'm coming sweetie; I'm just slow."
Mackenna: "But you're not slow when you make food."

----

Mackenna, said with such energy and enthusiasm I can't even explain: "Mom, we have Sprite. Mom, you have Sprite. Sprite is GREEEAAAAT!"

----

(In a conversation before I was going to go visit my sister)
Mackenna: "I miss Elliana."

Me: "I know, friends are pretty great. You know, a great thing about family, is that for a long time, Jocelyn will never move away from you."

"No, she is a part of our family....But someday, when she grows up, she'll move away and become a mommy."

"Well, hopefully she'll become a wife and then a mommy. We pray that you'll love Jesus by that point and want to do things the way he commands."

"And you'll be a grandma."

"I know, I can't wait. That's the whole reason I became a mommy was to be a grandma."

"But you'll have wrinkles."

"That's okay. Because you know what the wrinkles mean? They mean that I lived a happy life."

"No, they mean you are old."

Micah Man says....

Micah: "Mom, I know why God gave our bodies bones.....to hold up our skin. If we didn't have bones our body would be all flat."

-----

Micah, while we were driving on US 19: "They are building a new bridge. I think the other one must have broke."
Me: "No, they are making bigger so more cars can drive on it."
Micah: "Oh, like how our small straws didn't drink very much smoothie so we needed to get bigger straws so we could drink more."

-----

It is like I can almost hear his brain growing and figuring out more things and making more connections. Here is my little big guy winning his third straight game of "I spy race."

How did she get this big?

Me, at dinner tonight: "Mackenna, you are smart, and beautiful, and funny."

Mackenna: "I want to be cool."

She then changed her mind.

"No, I don't want to be cool."

Mom Week

Where is the time going?

We had a wonderful mother's day weekend last weekend - at least I did. Jocelyn and I were able to go the beach alone on Saturday while the older kids did some mother's day stuff with dad. I stayed home with Jocelyn from church on Sunday because of a gunky nose, and that was nice in its own respect. Curt did a great job of making lunch and giving me as much down time as possible on Sunday and Monday. I have a sweet family.

They have also said some cute stuff this week too. I've been waiting until I felt in a more "eloquent" or "sappy" mood to write this stuff out. That's not going to happen, so here it goes...

---
As we were getting ready for church -
Mackenna, to Jocelyn: "She's so big."
Me: "I know, how did she get so big?"
Mackenna: "She growed."..... (sensing that I was not okay with this fact) "I don't want you to stop her."
Me: "But then she'll be as big as you."
Mackenna: "I know, she has to grow. That's what big kids do."

---
When I tried to wake Micah when he fell asleep during listen books at "rest" time -
Mackenna: "We should just leave him alone."

---
Mackenna: "Can I have another one of your treats?"
Me: "No, they are mine."
Mackenna: "It's okay, I just want some of them."

---
Micah, to me: "What are your favorite colors?"
(We go through a whole list, and he picks out those colors to use in his coloring picture.)
Micah: "I'm just going to try them and see if I like them."
(He tries them)
Micah: "Okay, I like them, so I can use them."

---
Mackenna, praying: "Thank you for this wonderful day. Thank you for this wonderful world. Thank you for Mother's Day."

---
Micah: "When will it be the next Mother's Day?"
Me: "Well, can't every day be Mother's Day?"
Micah: "No, then we won't have our next Christmas."

---
Mackenna, to Daddy: "When I get bigger and Micah goes with you to work then I'll stay with mommy and we'll watch the babies."

---
Daddy, to Mackenna: "Look at my two pretty girls. Do you think Jocelyn is pretty?"
Mackenna: "Yes."
Daddy: "You know, when she grows up, she's going to look up to you, and you need to be a good example for her."
Mackenna: "When I grow up, I'm going to tell her what to do."

---
(Although I couldn't catch the details, I did overhear a conversation between M&M tonight about how they were going to get married and they would kiss everytime Mackenna said so.)

Love these kids

My family never ceases to make me smile...

The other night Mackenna got up to use potty before going to sleep for real. I hugged her and told her she was the best big girl ever. She responded, "but not when I disobey." So true.

580537_10150695832948244_647263243_9449550_697675993_n.jpg

Micah must have asked me something about if he could do something at some point in the future. I must have said "I don't care." I clearly don't remember the context very well. What I do remember is what he said a few minutes later. Out of the blue he asked, "Mom, does 'I don't care' mean yes? or no?" Funny kid.

_DSC5997.jpg

As if the differences between boys and girls weren't always clear to us, we were reminded of the difference when we were at Animal Kingdom a few weeks ago. Micah had been asking to ride the train all day (probably another story), but at this moment, we were at the Lion King show. Both kids were having a great time in the beginning. It was action packed and fun. After the monkey dancers did their thing, the mood shifted and a graceful bird dancer took center stage. We experienced two different reactions to this. Micah turned to dad and said, "I sure am looking forward to riding that train." Mackenna then calmly and quietly, in a "beautiful voice," said, "This is my favorite part."

P52 - Things that Grow

Alternate Title...."Better Late Than Never"

project 52 p52 weekly photo challenge my3boybarians.com

For this last week's theme, I wanted to highlight some of the things that are growing around my house.

While we were at Disney two weeks ago, Micah was walking down the path after leaving an animal trail. He just announced in his surprised voice, "Hey...5 plus 5 is 10!" Curt and I looked at each other with a little bit of shock. He was holding up his two hands with five fingers each, and it was clear that he was thinking through the total number of fingers showing. Curt asked him about some other doubles, like four plus four. He would hold up one hand with four fingers and another with four fingers, count them, and then tell us the answer. We were in total shock that he was just coming up with this with absolutely no prompting from us. We decided to ask him about a non-double and see what his little overdrive brain did with that one. We asked him what two plus three was. He did his two hand finger routine and announced that it was five. This next thing is what made my jaw really drop. He said, in total and complete shock, "Hey...there are two ways to make five! There is this way (holding up one hand with five fingers) and this way (holding up two hands, one with two fingers and one with three fingers.)" I about fell over. I decided to press my luck and ask him about one plus four. The same routine. Once announcing that it was also five, he said "Hey...there are three ways to make five!" I love that his brain loves figuring things like this out, and that learning can totally happen by just being with his family and exploring the world.

_DSC7001.jpg

Mackenna showed her growth this week in her fine motor, creative, arts and crafts abilities. Nana sent us these super cool sticker mosaic craft kits. They had got them in the mail and were really excited about them. I thought they were neat, but wasn't up for tackling a project that day. A little later, I was in a different room, and I heard Mackenna talking about completing one of the pictures. I was panicked about the mess she was making and the way she had probably ruined the craft kit and had done it all "wrong" since I hadn't explained to her ANYTHING about what she was supposed to do with it. I came into the room to see that she had nearly completed the high heel mosaic picture, and it looked just like the picture on the box. She had figured it out, got it out, and done it all on her own. It made me smile...a proud and surprised smile.

They really are growing up - and I'm loving most every minute of it.

Random Hearings in my House

Micah: "Can I have one of these?" (holds up a Reese's)
Me: "No, you picked a Snickers for your treat."
Micah: "But I didn't like it."
Me: "But you ate it all."
Micah: "I was just tasting it to see if I liked it. And I didn't."

---
Micah: "I know why I can't pull the weed out. Because ants are in the ground pulling it down."

---
Mackenna: "This strawberry is too small. I need to eat it."

(lots of other strawberry cuteness...like them eating the whole patch and her being my little helper through the whole job of cleaning them and making jam. She was a trooper - and actually helpful.)

_DSC5747.jpg

---
Mackenna: "Don't lay Jocelyn there. That is Raelyn's blanket."  (Raelyn is Mackenna's doll)
Me: "No, all of this stuff is Jocelyn's. It is okay if Raelyn uses it, but it is all Jocelyn's. Jocelyn is more important than Raelyn."
Mackenna: "No."
Me: "Your doll is more important than your sister?"
Mackenna: "No, they are both important."

_DSC5631.jpg

---
Mackenna, while picking up her room: "I don't want to do this anymore. I want to do something else.
Me: "Well, who made the mess."
Mackenna: "I did."
Me: "Well, who should clean it up then?"
Mackenna: "Daddy"

---
Micah, after leaving a store where we bought nothing: "What did we buy in that store?"
Daddy: "Nothing."
Micah: "Well then, why did we go in there?"
Daddy: "Son, that is a question you will be asking women for the rest of your life."
Mommy silently shakes her head.

Two Heads

Micah: "You are trying to get Jocelyn to look at you, but I want her to look at me. And she doesn't have two heads. That's silly that she doesn't have two heads."

_DSC4891.jpg

I don't think I think it's as silly as he does.

A couple of things I overheard on this happiest of love days.

_DSC4269.jpg

I thought it would be fun to interview the kids about their love interests today. Here are their interviews:

M&Misms

About some yogurt that I tried to mix half vanilla and half plain to cut the sugar:
Micah: "I don't like vanilla."
Me: "Yes you do."
Micah: "But it's different....and I don't really like different."

----
During a disagreement about seats at lunch, about who would get to sit in the seat that more faced the window:
Mackenna: "But I want to see the beautiful world."

----
Micah, to Mackenna: "That's it, you're off my list."

DSC_3153-5

(P.S. Not sure what else to say about this, but Mackenna has taken to saying "yeah" with this attitude/hick voice that causes it to sound like "yaa-uh." It is really funny and catches me off guard all the time.)

Top Quotes from my week - from all three of my babies

We'll go from oldest to youngest:

Micah:
He had woken up from a deep sleep sometime before midnight on Monday night. He came out into the living room in a sweaty panic. He was crying and asking for a drink....repeatedly and very "passionately." We tried to calm him down, and Curt went to get him a drink. I asked him to come sit next to me on the couch. I ran my fingers through his hair and let him calm down a bit. I asked him if he had a bad dream. He quickly said yes. I was pleased to hear some reason for his panic. I asked him what the dream was about. He responded (in his after sobbing, broken voice), "I dreamed that I couldn't have a drink."

DSC_3123-41

Mackenna:
I was feeding Jocelyn yesterday and it wasn't going very well. She was distracted and a little angry. Mackenna was right in her face and kind of making at least one of us claustrophobic. I told Mackenna I was going to go feed Jocelyn in my room. She wanted to come with us, and I told her no, that I needed to go to a quiet place. A little while later, when I was done, I called for Mackenna to come do something for me. She said she couldn't because she was feeding her baby. Still in the other room, I asked if I could come see. Without missing a beat, she said, "No, this is my quiet place." I did make it out to the living room not only to see her nursing her baby but also to see her holding her shirt up and out of the way with her mouth, the exact way I frequently do it during nursings. I was in awe of what she had absorbed.

DSC_3125-42

Jocelyn:
Prerequisites to understanding this encounter: 1.) We visited potential preschools for M&M today 2.) While I was feeding Jocelyn, I was watching the DVR'ed Parenthood episode about Haddie going off to college.
Jocie was sitting on my lap smiling up at me after eating. This inspired me to have a little chat with her. I told her that she was my precious, beautiful little baby. I commented that she would not always be little. One day she would be big and go to preschool and even go off to college some day. I asked her if she would remember her mama and all the great care I provided her in these days. She responded by filling her pants. I took that as a yes.

DSC_3128-44

(About the pictures: My elder two lovelies happily chose to lay side by side, sharing a blanket and pillow, while they watched some Sesame Street. Be still my heart. My youngest little lovebit has become a two finger sucker and that last photo shows her showing off her new obsession and clinging onto my old obsession - the pink blankie that I passed on to Mackenna who somewhat rejected it and passed it on to Jocelyn. I have two daughters. How did this happen?!)

Wrapping up 2011...a few more M&Misms

We just got home from a very long drive. The front room is an explosion of packages and suitcases. The back room looks pretty good. I'll stay back here and get these sayings recorded before the clock turns to 2012.

----
Dad: "Mackenna, I love you...even if you whine."
Mackenna: "I still love you even if you chew your nails."
Dad: "Does that make us even?"
Mackenna: "Yes, very even."

----
Upon arriving in Tennessee from Florida, at nighttime.

Mackenna: "Is this Tennessee?"
Me: "Yes, it is."
Mackenna: "It is dark in Tennessee. I can't see in Tennessee."

Micah: "Mom, the trees look different here."
Me: "Yes they do buddy. How are they different?"
Micah: "They are like branches trees."

----
To Great Grandma Snyder:
Mackenna: "Grandma, your hands and skin are all krumply."

----
Mackenna: "I want to sit by Audra at dinner. She is a genius."

----
Me, Tucking the twins in bed: "I don't want you to get up until morning."
Micah: "Well, if Nana comes in and asks me if I want to get up and watch Curious George with Allison, then maybe I will get up."

----
Shopping for some relatives for last minute Christmas gifts:
Micah: "Are Ashley and Cole both boys?"
Me: "No, one is a boy and one is a girl."
Micah: "Oh, so we need one beautiful gift and one cool gift."

----
Waking up and seeing snow out the window:
Mackenna: "It snowed!!!! It's Christmas!!!!"

----
Very triumphantly, Micah: "Dad, you were wrong. Dad, you were wrong."

----

Getting ready to drive back to Florida:
Micah: "I know why it is a long way to Florida."
Dad: "Why?"
Micah: "Because we drove a long way to Indiana.

----
After tattling about Micah coloring on table and after Daddy telling him to stop:
Mackenna:  "Thank you dad for dealing with his disobedience."

----
Complaining about the snack I offered him, trying to convince me to give him another Lifesaver mint instead:
Micah: "I had Teddy Grahams before."
Me: "Yeah?"
(Micah smiles and pauses, realizes that his logic is breaking down, and decides to lie instead of being illogical in his reasoning.)
Micah: "I haven't had a circle thing before."
(Oh my)

Music Moves

We were driving home after Christmas shopping, listening to Christmas music, and a “fast” song came on. Micah starting shaking his hands really fast almost like he was playing a drum in the air. He stopped and said, “I like fast songs. I like fast songs because I can do my fast moves.” Then he resumed playing the air drum. Mackenna responded moving her arms slowly and gracefully back and forth and said, “I like beautiful songs because I can do my beautiful moves.” A little bit later, Silent Night came on, and Micah said, “Hey, it’s a beautiful song.” Mackenna immediately began her “beautiful moves”.

DSC_0409

Please put a penny in the old man's hat

"Christmas is coming" is one of those songs that always runs through my mind as the big day gets closer. Not sure why. I have very distinct memories of me singing that song loudly outside my childhood church after a Christmas Eve service one year. I was so very excited for Christmas. I still am. And it is tomorrow! Yes, Christmas comes tomorrow in the Florida Sharbaugh household. We all are pretty excited. And since it is tomorrow, I figured I should probably record some of these quotes before they get lost in the flurry of what is to come.

- On Monday Mackenna exclaimed, "I'm so exkited to go to Indiana." (Aren't we all. Well, all of us except maybe Jocelyn.)

- After getting one shot on Tuesday, Mackenna yelled to the nurse happily, "I want another one."

- While making chocolate christmas chex candy on Tuesday, Mackenna told me, "I like tasting." Very true, the best part of cooking.

- Some day this week I came into the Florida room and both M and M were on the couch with dolls. I asked them if they wanted to watch a show. Micah told me, "we are. We are watching the beanstalk show with baby Micah and baby Mackenna." They were staring at a dark, empty screen. Easy entertainment I guess.

- The other day Mackenna told me, "Mommy, I like your hair. It is messed up."

- On Wednesday I asked Mackenna if she would still have fun in Indiana if there was no snow. She told me, "Oh, it will snow when I get there mommy."

- After nap the other day, I turned on a Charlie Brown show. Micah exclaimed, "It's Snoofy! We have Snoofy Doo! Now can I have some pants?"

- Micah: "I'm going to take a picture of my baby sister because I love her." A boy after my own heart!

- While Mackenna was talking on the plugged in cell phone to to daddy, "Daddy, you're hooked to the wall."

- While doing an art project the other day, Micah said this about the paint, "I'm mixing it up. I'm an artist." He then went ahead to say, "Let's just be done."

- When the 12 days of Christmas song came on the other day, Mackenna said, "It's the my true love gave to me song." Micah corrected her, "actually, it's called a pear tree song."

------
Mackenna: "What are you doing mommy?"
Me: "I'm cleaning this junk off the stove."
Mackenna: "Do junk and truck rhyme?"
Me: "No, junk rhymes with trunk."
Mackenna, "Oh, what rhymes with truck?"
Me: "Duck, Muck."
Mackenna: (She went on to list quite a few more rhyming words for truck...including the one that we would have all preferred her to skip. We just moved on.)
Micah: "And Starbucks rhymes with trucks!"  (Again, a boy after my own heart.)

----
Last night at dinner, Me: "Micah, please take your legos off the table."
Micah: "But I want to play with them."
Me: "You need to obey."
Micah, in his best pouting voice, thinking he was "winning" this argument: "Fine. I'm just going to eat. I'm not going to play with anything."

----
Micah: "Can I go potty and then get some lipstick on?" (referring to his chapstick that he insists on calling lipstick)

----
Me: "Mackenna, why did you mix your puzzle pieces with your Rice Krispies?"
Mackenna: "I was pretending to make a rocket pie."
At least it made sense to her.

----
And for some nativity set memories:
- The Mater monster trucks had fun playing with their long lost nativity friends. (Reminding me of the year that the wisemen showed up at the manger riding on a circus train. The joys of having more than one Little People interchangeable toy set.)
- Some machine guns joined in on the fun.
- Mackenna pretended to have Mary tell Jesus, "stop doing that. I'll give you a correction."

That wonderful man above took our oldest two shopping for me last night. They had a pretty fun jam session in the car on the way there. I'll let him tell the story, hopefully.

She is such a sweetie

Me: Mackenna, Daddy is Grandma's kid.
Mackenna: No, he's a daddy.
Me: Yes, kids grow up into daddys.
Grandma: And daddys grow up into grandpas.
Grandpa: And grandpas get old and decrepit.
Mackenna: Like you, Grandpa?

And Later,
Me: Mackenna, who is decrepit?
Mackenna (without any hesitation): Grandpa!!

From the Micah Man

After the Awana Grand Prix:
Me: Micah, did your car go fast or slow?
Micah: Well, it was fast when it was going and slow when it was not.

At Crispers with Grandma and Grandpa for lunch:
Micah (about the salt): Can I put some of this on my cheese pizza to make it yummier?

About their little bears from the "You're All My Favorites" book:
Me: Why can't Jocelyn have the little yellow bear?
Micah: Well, Jocelyn doesn't like yellow. But I do like yellow.

Micah's bad word

The kids came home after AWANA tonight, and I asked them what they had done. Micah told me that he had "hit" Reese.

Me: "You hit her?"
Micah: "No, I hissed at her. She wouldn't let me through, so I went 'hhhhhhhhhh' at her."

Curt came in then and told me how he had found this out. They were in the van heading home, and he had asked them what they did in Cubbies. Most of what they told him revolved around the playground.

Micah: "Somebody wouldn't let me up the hill, so I said I bad word."
Curt, extremely perplexed: "What did you say?"
Micah: "I said 'hhhhhhhhhhhhhh, you will not do that.' (in his best, deepest cat voice)

It all made sense to Curt now. As previously mentioned, we have a cat that says bad things/words.

Curt: "Don't hiss at people."
