#14 - #16 of 1000 Blessings (3 in 1)

My Ring Finger

14. Thankful for the wedding ring that sits there reminding me of my husband's love over the last 8 years

15. Thankful that I still have a finger after that crazy "sew through my finger/injury/infection scare" last September

16. Thankful that my sweet daughter clung to that very finger as we fell asleep together last night.

I am blessed. Even down to my finger.

My husband's job description

Some people don't know what my dear, sweet husband actually does all day at his job. That is okay; I just thought it might be helpful to share some things that he doesn't do...

1.) Mow lawns for people in the middle of the summer, giving the $5 payment to his wife
2.) Serve as a repo man for handbags that belong to your no longer friends
3.) Serve as the Salvation Army, distributing handed off treasures to people
4.) Figure out who in the church would fit in the adult diapers that were too small for "so and so"

Like mother, Like son

When I was a kid, I broke my arm...twice. Each time because I disobeyed. True story. The first time I did it (4 years old?), we were in the middle of no where in Arizona on vacation. Dad had put Mom, Christa, and I up in a tree for a picture and told me to wait for help to get down. I didn't wait. I fell and hit my right arm on a rock. On the drive to the hospital - in who knows where, full of many many pregnant women - I heard my parents say that my arm was probably broken. I looked over at my arm propped up on my cabbage patch doll, and started to panic. I knew that when dolls' arms broke, they just fell off. I didn't want my arm to fall off. Thankfully, it didn't. I do have a couple of sad pictures of me though with really long hair, sitting on the side of the pool because I couldn't swim, and singing in a preschool program with my broken arm. The next time (a year later?), I broke the rules again when I rode my bike down the "hill" on my street instead of just around the cul-de-sac. Again, I was a clutz, and I fell off and broke my arm.

Well, my sweet son has now followed in my footsteps. And he has somewhat taken the lead as he has broken both of his arms before the age of 3. The first time, falling down who knows how many stairs, we were somewhat relieved that all we had to deal with was a broken arm. This time, he very slowly fell off of the arm of a LazyBoy reciner and onto carpet. It didn't seem like his arm should actually be broken. I guess the doctor at the pediatric after hours clinic thought the same thing as he read Micah's x-ray as negative. He did leave us with a hint of doubt as he called us in to show us the x-ray saying, "well, if it's broken, here is where it is broken." Great. So now we have hopefully 3 weeks of dealing with a cast. A cast that Micah is already asking us to take off so that we can kiss it and make it all better.

p.s. Dad, we don't need to go apologize to the rock in Arizona
12. Nurse on the phone, PA in the office, and specialist Doctor in the orthopedic office who took our concerns seriously and treated Micah's elbow tenderness and swelling seriously, even though he was showing no pain and had full use of arm.

13. A second x-ray that clearly showed a fracture in Micah's humerus, allowing us to treat the problem (a cast) so that his future use of his arm and growth won't be hindered.

Win Win Win

"Hey mom...I need to get a drink, so I can sit on the potty, so I can watch something"

Later...

"I need to watch something so I can get a drink"

Oh my.

A girl and her kitty

My sweet little girl LOVES her kitty. This serves as a form of life insurance for the kitty. He really should be thankful.

I guess she decided that since she is so good to the kitty, he should start providing her with some love in return. The other day, as she was under discipline for disobedience, she looked very seriously at the cat and whispered, "help me my kitty." Oh my. How does one keep a straight face in moments like that - well done Dad.

Potato Soup

Posting a recipe from my friend Kim so that I can bookmark it somewhere other than facebook...

I made this the other night and there were no leftovers. So so so so good!

1 1/2 cans chicken broth
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon minced onion
1/8 teaspoon oregano
1/8 teaspoon parsley
5 tablespoons butter, melted
5 tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 cups half and half
4 cups cubed potatoes with or without skins
GARNISHMENTS:
sliced green onions
crisp cooked bacon bits
cheddar cheese

In large pan, mix chicken broth, water, minced onions, oregano, and parsley. Bring to a boil; simmer 5 minutes.

Add melted butter, stir in flour slowly, and add salt and pepper. Stir in half and half; cook until bubbly.

Add potatoes. Cook until done over low to medium heat, stirring occasionally. If cooked too fast, the soup will burn before potatoes cook thoroughly.

Garnish each bowl with the chopped onion, crisp cooked bacon, and grated cheese

* I used whipping cream instead of half and half. Let's be honest. Its just better .
